in other('s) words

Those in my generation who declare life know our mission is sometimes accompanied by rejection and acute pain. But we are not lone voices for the unborn! Rather, we stand on the shoulders of those courageous men and women who have come before us in the name of justice for all.

Here is what others have had to say about human abortion and justice. The first speaker is particularly interesting...

"An abortion kills the life of the baby after it has begun. It is dangerous to your life and health."
- Planned Parenthood
Federation of America, 1963, as quoted in Catalyst, January - February 2008

"The care of human life and happiness and not their destruction is the first and only legitimate object of good government."
- Thomas Jefferson

"Science teaches that human life begins at conception. If it is also true that it is affirmed by religion, it does not for that reason cease to be a strictly scientific truth... He who denies that human life begins with conception does not need to contend with religion, but science. To deny this certainty of biology is not to express a lack of faith, but a lack of basic knowledge of human genetics, something that is even known by the general public."
- Ecuadorian Federation of Societies of Gynecology and Obstetrics, April 17, 2008

"...[A] society that kills its children has lost its soul and its hope..."
- Jerome Lejeune, Life is a Blessing: The Biography of Jerome Lejeune, by Clara Lejeune, p. 49

"Abraham Lincoln recognized that we could not survive as a free land when some men could decide that others were not fit to be free and should therefore be slaves. Likewise, we cannot survive as a free nation when some men decide that others are not fit to live and should be abandoned to abortion or
infanticide."
- Ronald Reagan, Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation

"Sweeter even than to have had the joy of caring for children of my own has it been to me to help bring about a better state of things for mothers generally, so that their unborn little ones could not be willed away from them."
- Susan B. Anthony,
quoted in The American Feminist
, Spring 1998

"...[I]s it surprising that today we have become so morally blind (for wickedness blinds) that we save the baby whales at great cost, and murder millions of unborn children?"
- Alice von Hildebrand, The Privilege of Being a Woman, p.24

"...As a reporter, I usually am able to understand why people with whom I disagree think and act the way they do; but I am at a loss to understand how an abortionist finds his daily vocation in deliberately, brutally ending a human life."
- Nat Hentoff,
Colombia Daily Tribune, February 9, 2006

"In the history of the world, the true test of a civilization is how well people treat the most vulnerable and helpless in their society... unborn children are the most vulnerable and most helpless persons in our society."
- South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds

"More proof that science is the enemy of the pro-abortionists can be seen in reading their reaction to sonograms. NARAL and Planned Parenthood have done everything they can to keep women ignorant about the latest scientific advances. That is why they oppose virtually every state and federal law allowing for informed consent. They are positively frightened by ultrasound pictures. Indeed, an abortionist from Long Island recently admitted that 'no woman is going to want an abortion after she sees a sonogram.' He’s afraid he may lose his job."
- "Science Undermines Abortion Activists", Catalyst, January-February 2008

"I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."
- Elie Wiesel, Holocaust Survivor

"I believe abortion is destined for the scrap heap of history. Abortion is being held aloft by the hot air of a small well-heeled elite. It's on the artificial life support system of foundation money, politically correct elite opinion, special interests, media bias, and widespread ignorance of the facts... Legal abortion will never rest easy on this nation's conscience. It will continue to haunt the consciences of men and women everywhere."
- Pennsylvania Governor Robert Casey, 1993 speech to the National Press Club

"The answer to a crisis pregnancy is to eliminate the crisis, not the child."
- Frederica Mathewes-Green,
"Marchers Don't Speak for Many Women," USA Today, 8 April 1992, 13-A

“The real question today is not when human life begins, but, What is the value of human life? The abortionist who reassembles the arms and legs of a tiny baby to make sure all its parts have been torn from its mother's body can hardly doubt whether it is a human being.”
- Ronald Reagan, Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation

"All who are genuinely committed to the advancement of women can and must offer a woman or a girl who is pregnant, frightened, and alone a better alternative than the destruction of her own unborn child."
- Mary Ann Glendon, Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing, September 5, 1995

"If we are pro-life, we must recognize the need to take care of women who are faced with a difficult pregnancy. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy, we cannot protect the innocent child, unless we protect and care for the mother. We must help each mother to see the value of the gift that is a child and nurture the mother for her own sake and for the sake of her child."
- South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds,
statement on the Signing of House Bill 1215

"You destroy those who are tiny in body because fear is destroying your heart."
- Quodvultdeus, in reference to Herod and the Holy Innocents

"Is it alright for the government to allow the murder of an innocent human being? The evidence I see tells me the unborn is a human being. From the moment of conception, a new life comes into being with a complete genetic blueprint. The sex is determined. The blood type is determined. The moment that I learned that the unborn was a human being, not part of the woman's body but its own individual human being, I have no choice but to defend the most vulnerable among us."
- Kathy Ireland,
Hannity and Colmes, September 2002

"We are knee-deep in a culture of death... Look, in this advanced democracy, in the year 2000, is it our crowning achievement that we have learned to treat people as things? Our
moment in history is marked by a mortal conflict between a culture of life and a culture of death... Today we must choose sides."
- Congressman Henry Hyde,
during his floor debate regarding a ban on Partial Birth Abortion in 2000

"Many women believe that abortion is wrong, but that it’s the least of evils—bad as it is, they think it’s still a better alternative to having a baby, raising a child, or surrendering a child for adoption. We must show them that, while the other alternatives are challenging, abortion is the only one that kills an innocent person. Precisely because it does so, it has by far the most negative consequences in a woman’s life."
- Randy Alcorn, Why Pro-Life?, p. 21

"I dream... of a world where we can commit our social resources to the development of human life and not to its destruction."
- Benazir Bhutto, Cairo Population Conference, 1994

"When our laws tell people that what lies behind the thin wall of a women's abdomen during pregnancy is not a human being and that the destiny of a preborn child lies with the private conscience of the mother, we are essentially telling society that life itself is not important enough to be called an inalienable right. If life itself is not the most fundamental of all rights, then what is?"
- Bob Dornan, former U.S. Congressman

"To have a right to do a thing is not at all the same as to be right in doing it."
- G.K. Chesterton

“Any 'pro-life' effort that temporizes on contraception will be ultimately futile. Legalized abortions in the United States are usually estimated at about 1.5 million a year. This figure, however, does not include early abortions caused by the intrauterine device and some so-called contraceptive pills. Such early abortions have been estimated at between 6.4 and 8.8 million each year in this country."
- Charles E. Rice,
No Exception: A Pro-Life Imperative, p. 46

"Like an animal caught in a trap, trying to gnaw off its own leg, a woman who seeks abortion is trying to escape a desperate situation by an act of violence and self-loss. Abortion is not a sign that women are free, but a sign that they are desperate."
- Frederica Mathewes-Green, Abortion: Women's Rights and Wrongs

"I know this issue is very controversial. But unless and until it can be proven that an unborn child is not a human being, can we justify assuming without proof that it isn’t? No one has yet offered such proof; indeed, all the evidence is to the contrary. We should rise above bitterness and reproach, and if Americans could come together in a spirit of understanding and helping, then we could find positive solutions to the tragedy of abortion."
- President Ronald Reagan,
State of the Union Address, January 1984

"A person's a person, no matter how small."
- Dr. Seuss,
Horton Hears a Who

"Abortion does something to someone; it is not an "issue." While many would love to see agreement on the sop that abortion is a "political issue," it is no more a political matter than murdering your sister in the privacy of your home. In both cases, an innocent person is dead; that is murder, not a liberal versus conservative debate topic."
- Judie Brown Weekly Column,
August 17, 2006

“Having heard all of this, you may choose to look the other way, but you can never say again that you did not know.”
- William Wilberforce

  2. Correct me if I am wrong, but are there not many places in the Bible where God directly orders the murder of pregnant women and their unborn children? For example, when God orders the death of every living thing in the city of Jericho, which would include unborn children.

Not to mention miscarriages. If everything that happens is according to God's will, then every miscarriage is part of his plan.

God is a hypocrite. He says that killing unborn children is a terrible thing to do and that anyone who carries it out will be punished. But then he directly orders the murder of unborn children numerous times and is responsible for the deaths of millions of unborn children due to miscarriage.

Did God have a plan for all these aborted children? Could he have prevented these abortions? Did he choose not to prevent these abortions? Is he not the most prolific abortionist in the entire universe?

I wrote an essay about the 10 plagues/Moses story.
God decided to constantly beat the Egyptians with plagues, while also forcing the Pharaoh to be stubborn and not let Moses and his people go. God murders the children of the Hebrews enemies because they will not change their mind. They will not change their mind because God breaks Pharaoh’s free will and makes him stubborn. God is basically forcing this infanticide on the world. Here, he targets the innocent to punish the guilty. He kills children to punish the Pharaoh. It would be as if we built a weapon system that would kill only Iraqi children and leave the adults screaming in grief. How would you feel about that?

Just before he murders their children, God changes the free will of the Egyptians by making the Egyptians actually like the Hebrews. And then he still murders their children. Seems like it was all a game for God.

The Bible also issues a command to abort children when a husband suspects that his wife is unfaithful:

If feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure—or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure—then he is to take his wife to the priest…. After the priest has had the woman stand before the LORD, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse…
Here the priest is to put the woman under this curse of the oath—”may the LORD cause your people to curse and denounce you when he causes your thigh to waste away and your abdomen to swell.” He shall have the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water will enter her and cause bitter suffering. (Numbers 5:14, 18, 24)

So if a husband suspects his wife of infidelity, he is to bring her to a priest. The priest makes the woman drink poison that would normally cause an abortion. If she is guilty, the child dies. If she is not guilty, the poison has no effect and the child lives.

According to Jewish law, Joseph should have taken Mary to a priest and had her drink poison.
So according to the Bible, Jesus should have been brought to a priest for an attempted abortion.

  3. Hey Jared,

Thanks so much for your comment. Francis J. Beckwith wrote two really solid (in my view) articles that I think address your concerns and arguments quite well. Here are their links as Google docs. If you're willing, look through them and let me know what you think; the first may be of particular interest to you. I'd be happy to keep the discussion going if you'd like.

  5. Hi again Jared,

Sorry they didn't work. I was afraid that might happen because it's impossible (as far as I know) to make links within these blogspot comments. Did you try copying and pasting the URLs into the address bar of your browser? If that doesn't work, you can email me at catherinempalmer@gmail.com and I will send the articles to you as attachments. Sorry for the hassle!

  6. P.S. As far as I know/ have found, these articles are not available online unless you pay to read them... or else I would just send you to a site. Sorry. If you'd like to try to search them, though, maybe you will have better luck than me. Their titles are "A Critical Appraisal of Theological Arguments for Abortion Rights" (which should be especially helpful to our discussion) and "Brave New Bible: A Reply to the Moderate Evangelical Position on Abortion."

  8. Hey Jared,

I had the articles sent to me by the author. Emailing them to you will probably work best. What's your email address?
